JOE JOHNSON |
Associate Therapist |

Greetings, my name is Joe Johnson (he/him pronouns) and I am an Associate Therapist at Thrive Counselling. I hold a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Manitoba, a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Psychology and Sociology from the University of Winnipeg, and am a Registered Social Worker with the Manitoba College of Social Workers.
Fundamental to my therapeutic work is a non-judgemental lens, a collaborative approach, and the client-centered idea that we are all ultimately the experts over our own lives. I am mindful that therapy can be a sensitive process, and I strive to honour that trust by creating an emotionally safe, warm and approachable atmosphere. I believe humour can be a powerful tool in difficult situations. Our goal is to work as a team, to better understand the challenges that brought you to Thrive and explore the many ways they might be addressed.
My therapeutic practice incorporates a diverse set of styles, including Solution Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Emotion Focused Therapy, and Narrative approaches. I apply a strengths-based emphasis, harm reduction strategies, mindfulness and psychoeducational components. I practice from a trauma-informed perspective, and utilize theoretical frameworks such as Family Systems Theory, Anti-Oppressive Practice, and an Attachment Theory lens.
Throughout my professional experience I have had the privilege to work with many diverse clients, whom each present with their own unique goals. Some of the challenges I’ve supported clients with include anxiety, depression, family/ parenting conflict, relationship difficulties, motivation/ prioritizing goals, crisis situations, boundary setting, shame, communication skills, men’s issues, identity/sexuality, trauma, and substance use. I believe everyone has many examples of resilience in their lives; I strive to help individuals recognize and build on these existing strengths.
In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my partner (and our fur babies), seeing family and friends, cycling, reading, exercising, playing games, and excessively analyzing the latest films and shows.
I find it incredibly rewarding to support individuals to overcome challenges and reach their goals; I look forward to helping you do the same.
